Kathmandu: Monitoring of the sanitary landfill site where waste from the Kathmandu Valley is managed has commenced from the Kathmandu Plaza. The landfill site, where waste is disposed, is located at Bancharedanda, on the border between Nuwakot and Dhading districts. As part of an institutional reform program, CCTV cameras have been installed to gather information and monitor operations at the site.
The system has been installed to oversee the activities of vehicles and individuals entering the site, with the goal of preventing unauthorized actions. Chief Administrative Officer Pradeep Pariyar stated, “The installation of advanced CCTV cameras at the landfill site is part of efforts to enhance institutional strengthening through automated systems.”
The footage from the cameras will be monitored directly from the office of the Chief Administrative Officer, and the Department of Environmental Management will also have access to the live feed. The cameras have been strategically placed to cover the staff working on site, office buildings, roads leading to the site, and security booths. Chief of the Environmental Management Department, Sarita Rai, said, “Nine cameras will be used to monitor the site.”
The recently installed cameras are Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. Head of the Information Technology Department, Anirudra Nepal, explained, “These cameras can capture video with sound. In addition to digital number plates, they can also read handwritten number plates, including those written in Nepali script.”
