Kathmandu: Chief Minister of Karnali Province, Yamlal Kadel, engaged in a dialogue with over 70 commercial apple farmers in Jumla to address their challenges and discuss potential solutions. The interaction was part of his field visit to the upper Karnali region.
During his visit to Jumla, Kadel expressed his satisfaction with the increasing national market for Jumla apples. He highlighted the importance of enhancing apple production and marketing and emphasized the role of the provincial government in supporting these efforts. The dialogue aimed to gather firsthand insights from the farmers about the challenges they face and explore ways to improve the sector.
In his address, Kadel stated, “Apple farming has become a significant income source for local farmers, and as this issue becomes a nationwide topic, I want to understand the real conditions here directly from the farmers.” He acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts, including support from both public and private organizations, but stressed the need for a more systematic approach to further improve the industry.
While discussing the issues faced by the farmers, Kadel noted, “It’s unlikely that all problems will be resolved at once. However, after hearing your concerns, it will be easier for the government to develop policies, programs, and budgets that address these issues.”
One of the farmers, Lakshman Bohora from Patarasi, raised concerns about pests affecting apple crops, warning that it could make Jumla apples unsellable. He also mentioned challenges arising from the ban on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which restricts pest control. Bohora pointed out that the lack of quality nurseries and technical expertise was contributing to poor apple quality.
Another farmer, Gobinda Shah, highlighted issues with the grading machine established by the government, stating that the lack of electricity had rendered it unusable, causing problems for farmers.
Before the dialogue, Chief Minister Kadel visited Sano Guthichaur, home to the largest apple orchard in the region, where he inspected the Himali T&A Agro Farm House.
The interaction was organized by the Agriculture Development Office under the Provincial Government, with the participation of Agriculture, Land Management, and Cooperative Minister Binod Shah, Provincial Assembly members Tekraj Pahadi and Devendra Shah, and other relevant officials.
