NEA Earns Rs 11.36 Billion Profit in Six Months

Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) recorded a profit of Rs 11.36 billion in the first six months of the current fiscal year (FY) 2081/82. According to financial details published under the Right to Information Act, NEA generated a total revenue of Rs 70.44 billion from electricity sales, interest earnings, and other sources during this period.

The authority spent Rs 59.08 billion on power purchases, administrative expenses, and various projects, resulting in a projected pre-tax profit of Rs 11.36 billion by the end of Push (mid-January 2025).

After reporting a loss of Rs 8.89 billion in FY 2072/73, NEA has remained consistently profitable in subsequent years. In the previous fiscal year (2080/81), NEA had recorded a profit of Rs 14.46 billion. The profit generated is being invested in electricity generation, transmission, distribution infrastructure, and electrification projects.

Revenue & Expenditure Details

  • Electricity sales revenue: Rs 53.18 billion in six months.
  • Electricity purchase: 6.31 billion units bought from subsidiary and private producers at Rs 34.84 billion.
  • Electricity import from India: 242 million units imported, costing Rs 1.65 billion.
  • Electricity export to India: 1.77 billion units exported, generating Rs 13.09 billion in revenue.
  • Investment in electrification & projects: Rs 13.35 billion allocated.
  • Foreign aid-related expenditure: Rs 10.49 billion paid directly.

The NEA continues to expand its infrastructure while enhancing its financial stability, positioning Nepal as a key player in the regional electricity trade.
