Kathmandu: On the auspicious day of the 20th of Paush 2080, a momentous event unfolded as Commander-in-Chief Maharathi Prabhuram Sharma officially handed over the meticulously repaired and reconstructed Jitgarhi Fort to Butwal Sub-Metropolitan Chief Khelraj Pandey. The grand ceremony took place in the esteemed hospitality of the President Ramchandra Paudel, signifying a triumph in the preservation of historical heritage.

The Jitgarhi Fort, situated in Ward No. 1 of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City, holds immense historical, archaeological, and strategic significance. It served as the battleground where the Nepalese army, led by the fearless Colonel Ujirsingh Thapa, displayed indomitable courage, military skill, and heroism during the Nepal-English war of 1871-72.

Under the leadership of the Nepali Army and in collaboration with Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City, extensive reconstruction efforts were undertaken to revive the fort’s former glory. The ceremony marked the completion of this ambitious project, aiming to promote national unity, preserve historical heritage, and enhance the prestige of the region.

The restored Jitgarhi Fort now boasts additional structures reflecting the art of war, including a full-sized salik of Colonel Ujirsingh Thapa, war paintings, a garden, water fountain, security wall, 2.5 km of footpaths, railings, bridges, and various other structures. The meticulous attention to detail ensures that the fort stands not only as a historical testament but also as a contemporary marvel.

The special ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including the Chief of Lumbini Province Honorable Amik Sherchan, the Chief Minister of the Province Honorable Dilli Bahadur Chaudhary, people’s representatives, heads and representatives of government and non-government bodies, media personnel, and local residents. This momentous occasion celebrated the successful restoration of Jitgarhi Fort, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry and historical legacy of the region.
