Kathmandu: In a notable agricultural milestone, Nepal has recorded its highest rice production in the fiscal year 2080/81, as per data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The ministry reports a significant 57 lakh 24 thousand 234 metric tons of rice production, surpassing the previous year’s record of 56 lakh 21 thousand 710 metric tons in 2077/78.
Despite a 0.61 percent decrease in the total area planted with paddy (8 thousand 800 hectares less compared to the previous year), the production has increased by an impressive 4.97 percent. The ministry attributes this surge in productivity to the utilization of advanced seed varieties, reduced disease and insect impact, minimized damage from floods and landslides, and improved accessibility to fertilizers and agricultural tools.
Region-wise, Koshi province leads in paddy production this year, achieving 4.43 metric tons per hectare. In contrast, Madhes province reports the lowest productivity, averaging 3.49 metric tons per hectare. The ministry underscores the pivotal role of adopting improved seeds in enhancing rice production and productivity during the current fiscal year.
