Kathmandu: In a diplomatic encounter, Irish Upper House Speaker Jerry Buttimer praised Nepal’s remarkable achievements and progress during a courtesy call with Speaker Devraj Ghimire in Kathmandu. Acknowledging the enduring friendship since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1999, the leaders discussed bilateral relations, parliamentary exchanges, and key diplomatic developments.
Speaker Buttimer commended the formation of the Ireland-Nepal Parliamentary Friendship Group in both nations, foreseeing increased collaboration through reciprocal parliamentary visits. He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing commitment to parliamentary democracy, human rights, rule of law, and freedom, emphasizing the pivotal role of parliamentary relations in enhancing understanding.
Reflecting on Speaker Ghimire’s visit to Ireland in the preceding year, Buttimer underscored the discussions about intensifying parliamentary exchanges and fortifying bilateral relations. The leaders delved into Nepal’s post-2015 embrace of democratic principles, including federalism, secularism, and human rights.
President Battimer, on behalf of Ireland, conveyed support for Nepal’s development efforts through the European Union. He highlighted collaborative efforts in the education sector, with Ireland’s Ministry of Education and Parliament’s Education Committee actively addressing mutual interests.
