Nepali Ambassador Suvedi Elected Chairman of Business and Development Committee in WTO

Kathmandu: In the General Council meeting held on January 12, 2024, at Geneva, Nepali Ambassador/Permanent Representative Ram Prasad Suvedi has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Business and Development Committee of the World Trade Organization (WTO). He will serve in this capacity for the upcoming year, marking a significant achievement for Nepal.

Having joined the WTO as a member in 2004, Ambassador Suvedi’s election to the position of Chairperson is a historic first for Nepal. The country has been celebrating its membership in the prestigious international trade organization for two decades. The Ambassador is set to commence his responsibilities from the second regular session starting this year until the first regular session in 2025.

The World Trade Organization, primarily responsible for establishing international trade rules, also focuses on fostering discussions and debates centered around development. Ambassador Suvedi’s appointment promises opportunities for collaboration and consensus-building among member nations on issues related to trade, development, and investment.

His role as the Committee’s Chairperson will allow Ambassador Suvedi to engage in dialogues with influential stakeholders, promoting Nepal’s interests and enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, business, and investment. This appointment aligns with the Doha Development Agenda, outlining a fund to support trade facilitation and mainstreaming for the least developed countries.

As Nepal aims to elevate its status among the least developed countries by 2026, the Ambassador’s role is crucial in creating an environment conducive to the growth of these nations. The Nepali diplomatic mission emphasizes the significance of this position in contributing to a positive and supportive atmosphere for less developed countries within the framework of the World Trade Organization.
