Kathmandu: The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has released a press statement detailing the progress made during the first month of Minister Debendra Dahal’s tenure. The Ministry’s achievements reflect substantial efforts across various sectors under its jurisdiction.
One of the key accomplishments is the preparation and submission of the National Transportation Policy 2081 to the Government of Nepal for approval. This policy aims to address pressing transportation issues and set a clear direction for future developments.
Minister Dahal has completed briefings and provided necessary directions to all departments under the Ministry, including the Department of Roads, the Department of Railways, the Department of Transport Management, and the Office of Waterways. This step was crucial for assessing the current state of these departments and ensuring they align with the Ministry’s goals.
To tackle challenges posed by the monsoon season, the Ministry has implemented a plan to ensure that national highways remain operational, with disruptions resolved within a maximum of two hours under normal circumstances. A total of 135 mechanical equipment units have been deployed across various road sections, with an additional 129 units on standby.
A significant technological advancement has been the installation of a real-time road closure update system in Minister Dahal’s office. This system will provide live updates on road conditions, particularly during the monsoon season, ensuring timely responses to any disruptions.
The Ministry has also focused on road maintenance, with the first phase of routine repairs on major highways completed, covering 6,000 kilometers. Notices for bid invitations have been published to ensure that the remaining work is finished before the upcoming Dashain festival.
In a move to enhance efficiency, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Department of Transport Management and the National Identity Card and Registration Department to link driving licenses with national identity cards. This integration is expected to streamline processes and improve service delivery.
The Ministry reported progress in the Bardibas-Nijgadh (Chocha) railway section, where two out of three remaining railway bridges have been completed. Financially, the Ministry has spent NPR 6.18 billion out of the allocated budget for FY 2081/82, achieving 4.11% financial progress.
To ensure quality and timely completion of ongoing projects, Minister Dahal has been actively monitoring construction sites, including an on-site inspection of the Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel road on 18th Shrawan 2081. This visit involved discussions with local representatives and stakeholders to address challenges and accelerate project completion.
Addressing complaints about the halted construction on the Dhulikhel-Khawa section of the Araniko Highway, the contractor has been directed to resume work immediately and complete it within three months. Additionally, following the washing away of the Khadgal Bridge near Bahrabise by monsoon rains, the Ministry arranged for a diversion to restore traffic and initiated the installation of a Bailey bridge, which is already underway.
The Ministry also held an annual review workshop for FY 2080/81, with the Prime Minister in attendance. During the workshop, the Ministry’s progress was presented, and further directives were received from the Prime Minister.
In another significant move, the Ministry completed the appointment of three new members to the Roads Board Nepal, filling previously vacant positions and ensuring the Board’s functionality.
Lastly, a committee has been formed under the leadership of Under Secretary Mr. Arjun Prasad Aryal to study troubled contracts within the Ministry. The committee is expected to submit its report within a month, contributing to more effective management of infrastructure projects.
