Kathmandu : Nepal’s electricity exports to India have reached nearly 1000 MW, marking a significant milestone in the power sector cooperation between the two nations. This achievement was highlighted during the ongoing official visit of Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, to India, where discussions emphasized the critical role of energy collaboration in boosting Nepal’s revenue and supplying clean energy to India.
During a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, the two sides acknowledged the unprecedented opportunities presented by the Long Term Power Trade Agreement, which promises to further enhance bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. Both ministers noted the progress made in mutually beneficial partnerships, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration in this field.
Beyond energy, the discussions also covered various bilateral initiatives, including connectivity projects such as cross-border railways, roads, bridges, and digital financial connectivity. The ministers reviewed the progress of India-assisted projects in Nepal, which have gained momentum in recent years.
Dr. Deuba’s visit, at the invitation of Minister Jaishankar, from August 18 to 22, 2024, also included a courtesy call on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the historic ties between Nepal and India across multiple sectors.
The visit is a testament to the strong and evolving relationship between the two neighboring countries, rooted in deep historical, cultural, and civilizational connections. It also provided an opportunity to identify new areas of cooperation to advance the bilateral partnership.
