Kathmandu: The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will commence tomorrow in New York under the theme, “No One Left Behind: Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Current and Future Generations.”
While the assembly officially begins tomorrow, the high-level general debate will start from September 24 and run until September 28, with the closing session scheduled for October 1. According to the UN’s official schedule, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to address the assembly on September 26.
Key topics of discussion at this year’s assembly will include the ongoing global conflicts and their impact, post-pandemic inflation and poverty, climate change, sustainable development goals (SDGs), public health challenges, and the global food crisis. World leaders, including heads of state and government, are expected to participate in these discussions.
This year’s General Assembly is considered especially significant for Nepal. The recently passed Transitional Justice Bill by Nepal’s Federal Parliament is expected to send a positive message to the international community, showcasing Nepal’s success in advancing its peace process as a global model.
Additionally, Nepal’s role in UN peacekeeping missions and the contributions of its security personnel will be highlighted as a significant point of discussion. According to Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the UN, the country will prioritize discussions with its development partners during high-level political forums and side meetings.
Nepal is also focused on reaffirming its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and it plans to share its progress with the global community at the “Summit of the Future 2024.”
