Kathmandu: Sushil Gyawali has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nepal’s Investment Board. The decision was made during the Cabinet meeting held on Thursday.
Gyawali was selected from among five contenders who had applied for the position. Other applicants included Bishnu Prasad Bhattarai from Ward No. 9, Bhumikasthan Municipality, Arghakhanchi, Raghu Raj Kafle from Ward No. 9, Vyas Municipality, Tanahun, Ramdev Yadav from Ward No. 2, Dhanushadham Municipality, Dhanusha, and Bhisma Raj Dhungana from Ward No. 4, Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
The process for appointing the new CEO began after a vacancy notice was published on 28th Shrawan 2081 (August 12, 2024), as per Clause 12 (7) of the Public-Private Partnership and Investment Act, 2075. The position had been vacant following the expiration of the tenure of former CEO Sushil Bhatta.
The appointment process has typically favored candidates close to the UML party. Both former CEOs, Maha Prasad Adhikari and Sushil Bhatta, were also selected from UML-affiliated backgrounds.
Sushil Gyawali, a civil engineer by profession, has over 20 years of experience in local governance, including positions with Butwal Municipality and the Lumbini Development Trust. In 2015, Gyawali was appointed CEO of Nepal’s National Reconstruction Authority, where he played a significant role in post-earthquake reconstruction efforts. Before his appointment to the Reconstruction Authority, he served as the Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund.
Gyawali’s extensive experience in both government and public-private partnership projects, combined with his engineering background, makes him a notable choice for leading the Investment Board.
