Air Pollution Increasing Health Problems in Children

Kathmandu: Air pollution is increasingly affecting children’s health, with both physical and mental development facing direct impacts. Recent studies have shown that exposure to toxic air can lead to neurological developmental issues, asthma, cancer, and reduced lung function. Millions of children worldwide are exposed daily to harmful air, which is causing respiratory problems such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

In Nepal, studies have also indicated a rise in respiratory issues, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), pneumonia, and asthma. A survey conducted by Save the Children in Kathmandu and Saptari revealed that children are facing various health problems due to air pollution. The survey found that in Saptari, skin diseases were identified as the leading health issue, while respiratory diseases were more prevalent in Kathmandu. Common health issues identified during the survey included colds, fevers, headaches, nausea, coughs, throat pain, respiratory issues, lung and breathing problems, eye irritation, chest pain, asthma, allergies, various infections, and even heart attacks. Additionally, children were reported to experience stress and decreased concentration due to air pollution.

The survey, which focused on the effects of air pollution on women and children, revealed that over 70% of respondents in both districts believed that air pollution had adversely affected their livelihood and quality of life.
