PM Oli Unveils NPL Trophy, Highlights Key Moments in Nepali Cricket

Kathmandu: The launch of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) trophy today marks a significant moment for Nepali sports. Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed his pride and optimism for the growth of cricket in the country.

“This day is especially important for Nepali sports. Under the shadow of our glorious Dharahara, the launch of the NPL trophy brings new vigor to our sports sector,” said Prime Minister Oli. “The towering Dharahara reminds us of our history and culture, while the grand event of NPL represents the dreams of our players and inspires future generations.”

Prime Minister Oli highlighted how cricket has become a symbol of national pride and unity, emphasizing that the hard work and success of Nepali cricketers are now celebrated by youth across the country. “Cricket is no longer just a sport; it has become a symbol of national awareness and discipline,” he said.

Oli also mentioned key moments from the league’s teams:

Janakpur Royals’ Captain Asif Sheikh: “I watched the viral video where Asif Sheikh almost run out an Irish player. May Janakpur maintain its calm nature like this,” said Oli, giving a special mention to Sheikh’s leadership.
Kathmandu Gurkhas’ Captain Karan KC: Oli expressed confidence in Karan’s leadership, hoping that the Kathmandu-based team would rise to the occasion.
Pokhara Avengers’ Captain Kushal Bhurtel: While admitting that Bhurtel’s batting and bowling abilities have yet to be fully recognized, Oli wished him success in upcoming matches.
Chitwan Rhinos’ Captain Kushal Malla: Known for his powerful hitting, Malla’s potential was appreciated, with Oli mentioning that his style of play suits the aggressive nature of the Chitwan team.
Lumbini Lions’ Captain Rohit Paudel: “Rohit’s leadership is a source of pride for us,” said the Prime Minister, recognizing Paudel’s role in bringing Lumbini’s spirit to the field.
Oli also spoke of Sandeep Lamichhane, calling him Nepal’s cricket brand ambassador. “Sandeep’s bowling has made batsmen from around the world struggle, and this is why I say – when a Nepali gets a chance, they make it count,” he added.

Other notable mentions included Sompal Kami from Karnali Yaks, who is preparing for the T20 World Cup, and the upcoming star-studded NPL lineup, including Martin Guptill from the World Cup, joining the Biratnagar Kings.

“The NPL not only promotes Nepali cricket but also contributes to the promotion of tourism,” said Oli, affirming his belief that the league would have a significant impact on the country’s tourism sector.

Regarding the ongoing competition, Oli humorously stated, “As the Prime Minister, I am in a dilemma about which team to support. But I extend my best wishes to all teams.”

He also called on officials from the Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) to consider organizing a special women’s NPL league in the future.

With the NPL in full swing, the Prime Minister concluded, “Let’s all cheer for our teams and keep supporting them. But let’s avoid any conflicts among fans over team loyalties!” (jokingly).

The event marked a celebratory start to what is expected to be an exciting chapter for Nepali cricket and its growing international presence.
