Lalitpur, Jan 24 – The Agriculture Information and Training Center, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, has reported that approximately 47.7% of farmer families across Nepal have been registered in the national farmer listing system. This announcement was made during a provincial-level coordination workshop on farmer listing held today in Lalitpur.
Dr. Ram Nandan Tiwari, Chief of the Center and Joint Secretary, highlighted that following a secretary-level decision on December 6, the center was entrusted with collecting farmer data and managing an electronic registration system. The initiative aims to identify farmers, develop evidence-based government plans and programs, and ensure transparency and good governance in services provided to farmers through a collaborative approach among all three tiers of government.
As of January 15, around 1.97 million farmer families have been registered in the system. According to the National Agriculture Census 2021, there are an estimated 4.13 million farmer households in Nepal, leaving more than half still unregistered. Currently, the process of collecting farmer data online through local governments is ongoing, the center confirmed.
The Farmer Identification and Registration Program is being implemented under the authority granted by Section 47 of the Right to Food and Food Sovereignty Act, 2018. Additionally, the Farmer Registration System Management and Operation Directive, 2024, has designated the center as the responsible body for managing and operating the system.
Dr. Tiwari shared that the program plans to categorize farmers through the system and link their identification cards with the national ID and other software developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. This integration will support farmers in accessing services such as agricultural insurance, loans, chemical fertilizers, seeds, and subsidies. Discussions and interactions are underway to finalize the plans, ensuring the farmer listing system is seamlessly tied to service delivery.
The initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing agricultural governance and ensuring efficient service delivery to farmers in Nepal.
