Kathmandu: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has formally appealed to the Election Commission, expressing grave concerns over an incident involving intimidation and threats against their vice-presidential candidate, Sujata Thapa, in Sarkegad Rural Municipality, Humla District. This incident occurred ahead of the upcoming local by-elections scheduled for Kartik 16, 2081 (November 2, 2024).
According to the RSP, on Mangsir 1 (October 18), at approximately 1 PM, a group of 40 to 45 individuals forcibly entered the residence of Sujata Thapa and her husband, Bal Thapa. The couple was reportedly dragged out and taken to an undisclosed location in an abduction-style incident, causing panic within the community. Immediately following the abduction, the RSP informed Chief District Officer Narayan Pandey, who confirmed that police units had already been deployed to investigate after receiving prior reports of such threats.
The RSP claims that Sujata Thapa and her family were subjected to intense psychological pressure, being threatened against filing her candidacy under RSP. Reports indicate that she was warned of severe consequences if she proceeded with her nomination. The family now reportedly remains in a state of trauma, feeling too unsafe to continue with the electoral process. Local sources allege that members of the Nepali Congress were involved in orchestrating the incident.
Additionally, reports from Sarkegad indicate that RSP members actively involved in candidate selection and election campaigning were harassed, assaulted, and even physically harmed. Similar incidents of threats and attempts to manipulate potential candidates have been reported in Madhesh Province as well.
The RSP has condemned these undemocratic practices, expressing disappointment at the local administration and security bodies for failing to act swiftly and prevent such incidents. “This type of intimidation, mental torture, and coercion aimed at preventing candidacy is unacceptable and undermines the democratic process,” stated the party.
Highlighting that this is the party’s first participation in local elections as the fourth-largest political party in Parliament, the RSP has called on the Election Commission to take urgent measures to ensure a fair, safe, and unbiased electoral environment. The party also requested that those involved in these actions be identified and held accountable under the law.
The RSP emphasized that such incidents not only distress the party but also erode public trust and create an atmosphere of fear regarding the electoral process. They urged the Election Commission to act decisively to maintain the integrity of the upcoming by-elections.
